Congratulations to ICO’s Communications & Media Department, which recently won two APEX Awards for Publication Excellence. Jacqui Cook, editor of ICO Matters, was recognized for the cover story of the Spring 2011 issue, “Vision for the Future.” The department was honored as a group with a Best Redesign award for this year’s new Leadership Circle brochure.

ICO has received a very special recognition: the 2011 Special Olympics Illinois Outstanding Organization of the Year! The Outstanding Organization Award recognizes a club, business or organization whose efforts have significantly improved the Special Olympics Illinois athletes' experiences either locally or statewide. Special Olympics noted that "It is because of ICO that the Opening Eyes program has become a part of Special Olympics Illinois. The organization provides free eye screenings to an average of 240 athletes each year. They have handed out over 2,520 prescription glasses and 630 sports goggles so far."

In May, ICO had 10 presentations at this year's meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The College's faculty authors included: Drs. Messner, Pang, Roberts, Saeed, Schlange, Teitelbaum and Zoltoski, as well as students Chandra Engs, Lauren Foley, Elizabeth Knighton, Kimberly Michel, Cherie Nau, Nellie Salami and Audra Sexton.
