ICO Professor Emeritus Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom, Jr.
Selected VOSH/International’s
Humanitarian of the Year
Dr. Alfred A. Rosenbloom, Jr. was named VOSH/International’s 2007 Humanitarian of the Year in recognition of his legendary career that has provided treatment to thousands of patients as well as training to scores of doctors in the United States and abroad.
The award was presented to Dr. Rosenbloom at VOSH/International’s 35th Annual Meeting/Celebration in Tampa, Fla., this past October. Upon accepting the award, Dr. Rosenbloom quoted Sir Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what give.”
Dr. Rosenbloom served as Vice President of the VOSH/International board for four years. An active member of VOSH/Illinois and with mission experience spanning over 35 years, Dr. Rosenbloom has been a strong proponent of student involvement in VOSH, including students in his missions, serving as faculty advisor for student VOSH groups, and supporting their fundraising efforts.
Dr. Rosenbloom graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry in 1948. A former dean and president of the Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. Rosenbloom is well-known for his contributions to the field of optometric education, especially in the area of low vision. A diplomate in low vision from the American Academy of Optometry and chair emeritus of the Low Vision Services at the Chicago Lighthouse for People Who Are Blind or Visually Impaired in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Rosenbloom continues to serve patients at the Lighthouse’s original satellite clinic at Rush North Shore Hospital Center in Skokie, Ill.
He resides in Chicago, Ill. with his wife, Sarah.
