ICO Faculty Member Honored by AAO for Interprofessional Leadership
The American Academy of Optometry recognized professor and medical director of school-based vision clinics Sandra S. Block, OD ’81, Med, FAAO, FCOVD, with the Carel C. Koch Memorial Medal Award, one of its highest honors. Dr. Block received the honor at the Academy’s awards ceremony during its annual meeting in Seattle, Wash. The Award was established in 1974 and is presented to a person who has made outstanding contributions to the enhancement and development of relationships between optometry and other professions.
Dr. Block followed in her father’s footsteps and in 1981 received her optometry degree from ICO, after which she completed a pediatric residency. She has built her 30-plus-year career at ICO around education, primary eye care for children of all ages and public health. Dr. Block has been a consultant to the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program since 1995 and has been instrumental is developing its vision screening program, the reach of which extends globally. She is a Fellow and has achieved the level of Diplomate in Public Health and Environmental Optometry at the AAO, as well as a Fellow in the College of Optometrists in Visual Development.
