ICO does not require a specific undergrad major of its entering students. Our students come from a very wide variety of backgrounds! We recommend that you review the Entering Class Profile so that you may see the range of majors for the most recently enrolled class.
When choosing a major there are several things that you may want to consider:
Will you enjoy your major?
This is very important! You are much more likely to succeed in your studies if you are motivated for the courses and both challenged by and interested in the material.
Will you be able to complete the Required Pre-Optometry Curriculum?
You should be certain that your college plan includes the Required Pre-Optometry Curriculum and also allows you to build a strong foundation in the biological sciences. It is possible to complete these classes while working on a variety of majors but some degree plans may be more flexible in accommodating the prerequisites than others.
Will you be able to develop a strong science background?
It is highly recommended that you complete upper-level biology coursework in addition to the prerequisite courses in order to be prepared for the optometry curriculum. This includes such courses as physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, etc. Successful completion of heavy science courseloads will make you a more competitive applicant and will better prepare you for the rigorous optometric curriculum. You can likely achieve this with any major; however a major in a science may offer more opportunity to complete upper-level science coursework.
Choosing a College/University
ICO students come from a wide array of colleges and universities! When deciding where attend undergraduate school, focus on choosing an institution that you will both enjoy and find challenging. The best institution for each person is a very individual choice and you should determine where you will feel most comfortable (e.g. large school/small school, public school/private school, location, etc.). You should also consider where you will gain the most from your undergraduate experience in terms of academics, extracurricular opportunities, and life experience.
You should also choose a college/university that is regionally accredited. ICO will only accept credits from accredited two-year or four-year colleges/universities. If you are uncertain of an institution’s accreditation, please contact their registrar’s office. Please keep in mind that if you are attending a two-year accredited institution, you also are advised to complete some of your science coursework at an accredited four-year college or university.
