The best opportunity to learn about optometry and the day-to-day life of those in the field is always to go right to the source!

ICO encourages all prospective students to contact and spend time with a Doctor of Optometry practicing in their area. This may be possible in the form of shadowing, observation, volunteer work, internships, or employment. Whichever the case, take the time to ask plenty of questions… this experience will help you decide whether you can see yourself as an optometrist in the future!

ICO does not require applicants to log a specific number of shadowing or observation hours. The primary goal is to guarantee that you are confident in your career choice and to assure the Admissions Committee that you are making an informed decision. For your application to ICO, you will need to submit Letters of Evaluation, one of which must come from a practicing optometrist. The more time you spend with your local optometrist, the more likely they will be able to write a knowledgeable and informed letter.
