Located directly across the street from ICO, the RC is a safe, convenient housing option that is unlike anything available at other optometry schools. Accommodating up to 200 students, the RC offers multiple living arrangements and such common amenities as wireless internet, a computer lab, study and social lounges, table games, laundry, furnished outdoor areas and 24/7 security staff.
The library contains a comprehensive collection on eye care, the visual sciences and general health. It also provides access to multiple medical databases with hundreds of thousands of full-text books, journals and articles.
ICO’s 466-seat Lecture Center underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation in 2011 and is a state-of-the-art learning facility complete with HD screens and lighting, swivel seats and multiple tables with built-in power outlets.
The cafeteria serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, and brunch on the weekends. In addition to a variety of hot dishes, including vegetarian options, there is a deli station and a salad bar.
The Eyepod offers students 38 ophthalmic teaching lanes with specialized lighting in two eye labs, individual assessment rooms for clinical testing, five teaching laboratories with separate preparation space, six research laboratories, and study and lounge areas with views of downtown Chicago.
The fitness center features treadmills, elliptical trainers, stair climbers, stationary bicycles, a rowing machine and a variety of stretching and strength training equipment, including free weights and machines. There is also a full-size gymnasium, locker rooms and two racquetball courts. A variety of weekly classes–including spinning, yoga, strength training and Zumba–are available.
In addition to protecting vehicles from the elements, the garage offers car-owners a place to park that’s monitored 24/7 by ICO Security. There are 285 spaces, and the cost per year is $648; for three quarters the cost is $540. Students living in the RC can obtain permission from Security for any visiting guests to park in the garage free-of-charge for the duration of their visit.
With 61 fully equipped examination lanes and more than 100,000 annual patient visits, the IEI–located onsite at ICO–is one of the largest providers of vision and eye care services in the country. Students begin assisting patients at the IEI in their first year and progressively take on more responsibility with patients each year. The IEI has a number of satellite clinics, including one in partnership with the Chicago Public Schools.
