I chose ICO for my education and career because of its fantastic clinic and top notch clinicians. We see a lot of patients here, many of whom have ocular pathology. This provides a superior educational opportunity. You leave here ready to manage difficult cases. Additionally, the leadership at the college really listens to students’ concerns and accommodates them whenever possible. The faculty members are also very happy here. Both of these things lead to a fulfilling experience for students at ICO. Biography Dr. Stone is the Assistant Dean for Didactic Education. She joined the ICO faculty full-time in 2005, before which she worked in private practice. She sees patients primarily in our Primary Care department. Dr. Stone also co-teaches the Neuro-Ophthalmic Disorders course. Dr. Stone is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and a consultant for the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. The Illinois Eye Institute, ICO's onsite clinic, offers a rich and rewarding clinical experience. Biography Dr. Heather McLeod is an Associate Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) and Directory of Residency Programs. She received her optometric degree from ICO and completed a residency in ocular disease and special testing at State University of New York College of Optometry. Dr. McLeod is an attending optometrist in the Primary Care, Advance Care, and Urgent Care Services of the Illinois Eye Institute and teaches in the optometry methods and procedures sequence. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and member of the American Optometric Association. After a successful career in private practice for nearly 10 years, I wanted to fulfill a lifelong interest of education and clinical research, which led me back to ICO. I also feel that I add a different dimension to the clinical program by bringing my experiences back to ICO. Diversity of faculty, strong clinical training, and established traditions afford students the best optometric education! Biography Dr. Opitz received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University Chicago and proceeded to earn his doctorate of optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1996. Following graduation, he completed a hospital-based primary care/ocular disease residency at the Hampton Virginia Veterans Administration Medical Center from 1996-1997. In July 2006, Dr. Opitz accepted a full-time faculty appointment at the Illinois College of Optometry, where he serves as associate professor in the Department of Clinical Education. He is the Senior Director of Ophthalmology Services and Practice Development for the Illinois Eye Institute. Prior to his academic appointment, Dr. Opitz was partner in a multidisciplinary medical/surgical eye care center. His areas of interest include glaucoma, uveitis, ocular surface disease and clinical research. Dr. Opitz is a member of AOA, IOA, OGS and ARVO. It has given me the opportunities to explore the many aspects that optometry has to offer. I love working with the students in clinic and seeing them grow into wonderful clinicians. I give them a lot of credit for making me a better clinician and keeping me on my toes to push me to learn more. I love the patients that I have the privilege to treat at the Eye Institute and the impact they have on me as a clinician and a person. Biography Dr. Danielle Piser (Poole) received a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Mercyhurst University in 2003 and is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Optometry (2007). She developed a passion for low vision and geriatric care and went on to complete her residency at the Illinois College of Optometry in low vision and ocular disease (2008). Immediately following her residency, she became a clinical assistant professor at the Illinois College of Optometry. Dr. Piser has co-authored an article on stroke rehabilitation and has given continuing education lectures on urgent care, cataract surgery co-management, vision rehabilitation, geriatrics and contact lenses. As an active member of the American Academy of Optometry, she received her fellowship in 2009. She is also a member of the American Optometric Association, the Illinois Optometric Association, the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness and the vision section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Piser currently works as a full-time faculty instructor at the Illinois Eye Institute and serves as Chief, in the Alfred and Sarah Rosenbloom Center for Vision and Aging. She concentrates in geriatric eye care, ocular disease and vision rehabilitation. She also manages patients with ophthalmology performing cataract pre-operative and post-operative examinations. ICO is unique for delivering the highest level of clinical education. I have been at ICO for nearly 25 years and continue to be challenged by the patient care and in awe of what I learn daily. ICO delivers the highest quality education within a warm and family atmosphere that is part of the DNA. ICO is my family and truly the best career one could dream of. Biography Dr. Valerie M. Kattouf is an Associate Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry, where she teaches in the classroom and clinic, works with residents, and conducts clinical research. She is also Chief of the Dr. Robert and Lena Lewenson Center for Pediatric and Binocular Vision at the Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago. In addition to teaching at the Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. Kattouf is a proud alum. After graduating from ICO, she completed a residency in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision at the State University of New York Optometric Center. Now, with years of clinical experience in the areas of infant and toddler vision care, strabismus and amblyopia, and concussion and adult binocular vision disorders, Dr. Kattouf lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Kattouf is also a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and the College of Optometrists in Visual Development (FCOVD). I know firsthand how well rounded the didactic and clinical education is at ICO from my experience as a student and resident. I wanted to be a part of the team that teaches and encourages such excellent clinicians in both the classroom and in clinic. Biography After graduating from University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree, Dr. Hohs moved to Chicago to start her journey at Illinois College of Optometry. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree and completed her residency at ICO in Primary Care and Ocular Disease. As a faculty member, she works in the laboratory and clinic setting teaching first through fourth year students.
