The faculty here takes pride and satisfaction in knowing they are helping to educate the next generation of eyecare providers. Our urban location provides diversity in patient encounters that encompasses routine refractive cases to complex diseases. Biography Dr. Chaglasian is a graduate of the State University of New York College of Optometry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. After a decade in private practice, she became a full time faculty member at the Illinois College of Optometry, where she is an Associate Professor supervising clinical care in the Illinois Eye Institute. She has served as Coordinator of the Cornea/Contact Lens Residency program and the Assistant Dean for Community Based Education and International Programs. In May of 2021 she was appointed Associate Dean for Faculty. She lectures on the topics of refractive surgery and anterior segment disease. Biography Dr. Heather McLeod is an Associate Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) and Directory of Residency Programs. She received her optometric degree from ICO and completed a residency in ocular disease and special testing at State University of New York College of Optometry. Dr. McLeod is an attending optometrist in the Primary Care, Advance Care, and Urgent Care Services of the Illinois Eye Institute and teaches in the optometry methods and procedures sequence. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and member of the American Optometric Association. ICO is unique for delivering the highest level of clinical education. I have been at ICO for nearly 25 years and continue to be challenged by the patient care and in awe of what I learn daily. ICO delivers the highest quality education within a warm and family atmosphere that is part of the DNA. ICO is my family and truly the best career one could dream of. Biography Dr. Valerie M. Kattouf is an Associate Professor at the Illinois College of Optometry, where she teaches in the classroom and clinic, works with residents, and conducts clinical research. She is also Chief of the Dr. Robert and Lena Lewenson Center for Pediatric and Binocular Vision at the Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago. In addition to teaching at the Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. Kattouf is a proud alum. After graduating from ICO, she completed a residency in Pediatrics and Binocular Vision at the State University of New York Optometric Center. Now, with years of clinical experience in the areas of infant and toddler vision care, strabismus and amblyopia, and concussion and adult binocular vision disorders, Dr. Kattouf lectures nationally and internationally. Dr. Kattouf is also a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) and the College of Optometrists in Visual Development (FCOVD). When I reflect on my time as a student and faculty member at the Illinois College of Optometry, I think about the resources that ICO has to promote learning not only among students, but also continued learning among faculty. ICO has an excellent library and many nationally known speakers on a wide range of topics. The ocular and systemic conditions typically encountered in ICO/IEI’s clinic program are varied and challenge not only students but faculty as well. On a personal note, I think ICO is a caring place. I see examples of this in our interactions with patients and also in the interactions of staff, students and faculty. There are many examples of the positive impact that is made within ICO as well as the external community be serve. I often am contacted regarding ICO’s programs for uninsured patients because there are such limited local resources for so many of these individuals. Biography Dr. Winters is a 1991 graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry. After graduation, she completed a residency in geriatrics and rehabilitative optometry at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Currently, she is an associate professor of optometry at ICO, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1995. She practices in both the Primary Care and Low Vision clinics as well as teaches the didactic portion of the color vision curriculum. She is medical director of the Vision of Hope Health Alliance. Through the Vision of Hope Health Alliance, low-income uninsured adults can receive eye care and referral for general medical care. Her research interests include characterization of the low-income uninsured population seeking eye care through VOHHA, acquired and inherited color vision deficiencies, motion sickness among visually impaired individuals, and the association between long-anterior zonules and smoking. I feel fulfilled working with our patients, growing as a doctor and passing my knowledge on to our students and residents. Biography Dr. Speilburg is an Associate Professor at ICO. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan and graduated with valedictory honors from the Illinois College of Optometry. She has worked full time at ICO/IEI since completing their residency program in Primary Care and Ocular Disease. She teaches optometry students and residents in the laboratory, classroom and patient care clinics of ICO. Her research and clinical interests include glaucoma, ocular disease and primary eye care. She is the coordinator of the Primary Optometric Procedures curriculum and co-teaches glaucoma in the Ocular Disease curriculum. Dr. Speilburg is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, American Optometric Association and Illinois Optometric Association.
