  • Corneal Cross-linking to Debut in Clinic

In January, ICO announced EyePrintPRO, a new corneal technology in the The Illinois Eye Institute. We are proud to introduce a second innovation in the clinic. It is called corneal cross-linking (CXL). Cross-linking benefits patients with conditions like keratoconus or ectasia. Previously, the only solution for these issues was corneal implants, which come with a long recovery time and risk of rejection. Corneal cross-linking is non-invasive, using vitamin B2 (riboflavin) drops and UV light instead of surgery. Patients recover within days. “ICO is extremely excited,” says Dr. Jennifer Harthan. “This will serve as not only a treatment option for current patients, but future patients as well.” Dr. Osvaldo Lopez, Chief of Ophthalmology at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, has been waiting for corneal cross-linking to come to the United States for over 15 years. When the FDA approved the Avedro system on April 18 of last year, he had ICO’s order placed within a week. “I find that ICO is a tremendous partner in this because of their reputation and the way they can reach out to the optometric community that no one else can,” he says. Combined with EyePrintPRO, corneal cross-linking makes the Illinois Eye Institute a top-tier choice for corneal solutions. Says Dr. Leonard Messner, Executive Director, “The Illinois Eye Institute is delighted to offer this unique and transformative procedure.”

  • Board of Trustees Welcomes Dr. Nana Owusu

On Friday, February 3, the ICO Board of Trustees voted unanimously to welcome Nana Owusu, OD ’08, to the Board. Dr. Owusu hails from Winnipeg, Canada. Since graduating, he has expanded his practice at Prairie Eye Care to three locations, and offers scholarships to inner city students. Dr. Owusu is deeply connected to ICO. He participates in our Alumni Council, and was recently featured in ICO Matters. In addition to optometry, Dr. Owusu is passionate about family, travel, football, coaching, and his prized collection of Air Jordan shoes. We are honored to have him serving the Illinois College of Optometry in this capacity.

  • Custom Cornea Tech Comes to ICO

After being on a waitlist for three years, the Illinois Eye Institute has added EyePrintPRO services to its Cornea Center for Clinical Excellence. EyePrintPRO creates a 3-D model of a patient’s entire ocular surface, giving a truly individualized contact lens fit. The result is a prosthetic scleral cover shell- a solution for keratoconus, irregular astigmatism, dry eye, deformed eyes, and chemical burns. “For patients who have tried and failed to find optimal vision or comfort with contact lenses, this custom prosthetic technology can be life-changing,” says Dr. Jennifer Harthan. “From an academic standpoint, ICO students now have the opportunity to learn about all the different options available when treating patients with irregular corneas.” All of the providers in the Cornea Center are certified EyePrintPRO practitioners. The Illinois Eye Institute is the only location in Chicago to offer this technology.

  • Dr. Karen Eng Elected Chairman of ICO’s Board of Trustees

In her career, Dr. Eng has focused much of her energy on promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education with girls and women. This makes the role of chairman an especially good fit, as ICO’s student population is more than 70 percent female. “I am extremely honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve as the chairman,” said Dr. Eng. “We have been striving to build diversity on the board of trustees to represent our constituents, and I welcome the opportunity to champion this effort. My hope is to continue the strong leadership of the board of trustees, and to empower our next generation of optometrists.” Dr. Eng will serve a one-year term leading the college’s governing board, which is comprised of 20 members with varied backgrounds in education, healthcare, business and community leadership. “She will be an outstanding partner in the governance and strategic initiatives of the Illinois College of Optometry,” said ICO president Arol Augsburger, OD. “Her work with the Asian American and business communities both locally and nationally has already had great impacts for Illinois and the country at large. Dr. Eng has deep respect for ICO’s traditions and people, and is a great asset to our work in best preparing students for practice.” Dr. Eng is the President and CEO of CSMI, which specializes in engineering consulting to the FDA and USDA-regulated industries. She is actively involved with other organizations and boards, such as the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Illinois Business Enterprise Program Council, Illinois Comptroller Women’s Advisory Council, and the Asian American Advisory Committee for Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth.  Recently, she was appointed to the Advisory Board for National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship (ACE).

  • ICO Prepares for Academy 2016

Students, faculty, alumni, and friends are packing their bags for Academy 2016– the American Academy of Optometry (AAO)’s annual meeting. This year’s event is November 9-12 in Anaheim, California. The meeting provides an excellent opportunity for people in the profession to network and learn about the latest developments in optometry, including CE programs, lectures, and scientific research. As the oldest and most popular optometry school in the nation, ICO will be well represented. Our faculty and residents have produced 41 posters full of new research. Meanwhile, our students will be recognized for their achievements in scholarship programs. Several ASCO meetings will also be taking place, with the ASCO Development meeting being planned by ICO’s own Connie Scavuzzo. While at Academy, don’t miss out on the ICO Alumni and Friends Reception, 7:30 p.m. at the Anaheim Marriott. We’ll be in the Orange County Ballroom 1 & 2. A 50/50 raffle will be held to help raise funds for the Alumni Association Scholarship, and alumni will have the opportunity to become Alumni Ambassadors for ICO. All are welcome! We wish safe travels to the ICO family and all of our colleagues. Enjoy California! #Academy #California #Academy2016 #AAO #Anaheim

  • Dr. Newton K. Wesley Foundation Supports New ICO Myopia Study

The Illinois College of Optometry has signed an agreement with the Dr. Newton K. Wesley Foundation to support a new research project. ICO will be studying the effects of orthokeratology on slowing the progression of myopia. This study hopes to expand potential application of orthokeratology to a novel population, African American school-aged children. Lee Wesley, DMin, president of the NKWF, signed the official document at ICO on October 19, 2016. Also in attendance on behalf of the Foundation were Roy Wesley, OD, PhD, and Victoria Granacki, MS. The individuals overseeing the project at ICO will be Drs. Yi Pang, Valerie Kattouf, and Jennifer Harthan. Research will take place in the Cornea Center for Clinical Excellence within the Illinois Eye Institute. We thank the Dr. Newton K. Wesley Foundation for its support, and look forward to how this research could benefit the lives of young patients.
