Biography Dr. Bradley grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She graduated top of her class from Saint Mary’s College of California with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, then attended UC Berkeley for optometry school. She completed her residency in Cornea and Contact Lens, also at UC Berkeley. In her free time, she likes to explore new restaurants and breweries, go on bike rides, and hike (or now that the California mountains aren’t nearby anymore, walk Lakeshore Trail or the River Walk). Biography Dr. Mothersbaugh grew up in Lake in the Hills, IL and is the son of Ohioans who spent their careers in the automotive industry with a major tire corporation. He graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL in 2008 with a double major in Biology and Psychology – the first in his family to get a college degree. His interest in Optometry rose from a service-driven mindset and a passion for simplifying the complex: learning how to explain principles of optics and neurological pathways to patients was a natural fit. While he originally planned to spend his career in private sector Optometry, he fell in love with education while a student at ICO – and hasn’t left yet. Biography Dr. Neher completed his undergraduate education at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, earning a Bachelor's of Arts in biology and concentration in biochemistry. He went on to earn his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Illinois College of Optometry in 2022 and then went on to complete a residency in primary eye care and ocular disease at ICO in 2023. Dr. Neher works in the Cornea and Contact Lens department fitting a variety of contact lens modalities, while also training third and fourth year student clinicians. Biography Dr. Crumbliss received her optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2003 and completed a residency in Low Vision and Ocular Disease at the ICO and the Deicke Center for Visual Rehabilitation in 2004. Upon joining the faculty of the Illinois College of Optometry on a part-time basis in 2004, she also began practice as a Low Vision Consultant with The Chicago Lighthouse. Dr. Crumbliss enjoys teaching students through their observation of her education of patients about their eye conditions and the relation to the patients function. This connection with patients is what inspired her practice of low vision rehabilitation and the teaching of students and residents followed suit. Dr. Crumbliss lectures to patient groups and students and residents in optometry and ophthalmology regularly. Her goal is to help individuals with vision loss find strategies, devices and technology to assist them in living with vision loss and to to ensure patients receive prompt diagnosis and treatment to minimize their vision loss. Our students receive extensive experiences in all areas of patient care including ocular disease, low vision rehabilitation, contact lenses, pediatrics/binocular vision, urgent care and primary eye care. Our classroom experience prepares students well for our challenging patient care environment, as evidence by our students' performance on the National Board and OEBC examinations. Although ICO is a "large" optometry school, we have a very close-knit community. When I first came to ICO as a faculty member in 1985, I thought that I would probably stay for just a few years. All these years later, I find that I still wouldn't want to be anywhere else! Biography Dr. Messner joined the ICO faculty in 1985. Prior to her appointment as Academic Dean, she served in a variety of administrative roles, primarily related to patient care education and residency programs. In addition she has been an active teacher in the classroom, laboratories, and clinical program throughout her career. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and has served in a variety of professional leadership roles, including the Illinois State Optometry Licensing and Disciplinary Board, the ASCO Residency Affairs and Academic Leadership Committees and as past chair of ASCO's Chief Academic Officer's group. She is a past Chair of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education and continues to serve as an active Senior Consultant and member of the Residency Committee. Biography Dr. Himanee Patel received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2022. She completed a post-graduate optometric residency program in Ocular Disease/Primary Care at the Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, IL. Dr. Patel is passionate about teaching and loves to work with students that are in different stages of their learning experience. Some of her optometric interests include primary care, ocular disease, emergency eye care, glaucoma, and dry eye. Dr. Patel has presented at several optometric meetings across the country, and she is currently pursuing her fellowship through the American Academy of Optometry. In her free time, Dr. Patel enjoys spending time with her husband, traveling, reading, playing tennis and baking. Biography Dr. Flynn Roberts received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1991. The following year she completed a residency in Binocular Vision and Pediatrics at the Illinois Eye Institute. She joined the clinical education faculty in 1992 and has been an educator in the Primary Care service of the Illinois Eye Institute since that time. From July 1, 1999 to June 30, 2000 she was a Visiting Research Specialist at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Ophthalmology. During that time she completed a Fellowship in Hereditary Retinal disease and Visual Electrophysiology under Gerald A. Fishman, M.D. Dr. Flynn Roberts is currently the Coordinator of the Electrophysiology Service. She has authored peer-reviewed articles about inherited retinal diseases and has presented research in visual electrophysiology at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Flynn Roberts is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and was a former Faculty/Student Liaison for ICO and Chair of the Faculty/Student Liaison Committee of the AAO. She has also been an officer in the Illinois State Chapter of the AAO. Additionally, Dr. Roberts has been active in her community having served on the Board of Governors of the River Forest Community Center, as the President of the Family and School Association and President of the Athletic Committee of St. Luke School in River Forest, IL. Special Interests My specialty is Visual Electrophysiology. My research involves visual electrophysiology and inherited eye diseases. I feel supported by my colleagues and our administration. I feel fulfilled working with our patients, growing as a doctor and passing my knowledge on to our students and residents. Biography Dr. Speilburg is an Associate Professor at ICO. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan and graduated with valedictory honors from the Illinois College of Optometry. She has worked full time at ICO/IEI since completing their residency program in Primary Care and Ocular Disease. She teaches optometry students and residents in the laboratory, classroom and patient care clinics of ICO. Her research and clinical interests include glaucoma, ocular disease and primary eye care. She is the coordinator of the Primary Optometric Procedures curriculum and co-teaches glaucoma in the Ocular Disease curriculum. Dr. Speilburg is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry and member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, American Optometric Association and Illinois Optometric Association. She joined the faculty following her residency and has enjoyed teaching at ICO ever since. She is active in the classroom, laboratory and clinical care settings. Dr. Pihos is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She also served as the primary care residency coordinator at ICO from 2005-2009. The comprehensive didactic and clinical experience of ICO students and graduates continues to impress me and I am proud to be a graduate of ICO. Biography Dr. Ittner is an assistant professor at ICO, teaching third- and fourth-year optometry students in a primary care setting with a focus on ocular disease. In addition, she teaches the refraction course for the optometry sequence for first-year students. When not at work, Dr. Ittner can be found riding her bicycle around Chicago and enjoying the amazing food in this city.
