The Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) named Dr. Arol Augsburger as its president in November of 2002. A catalyst for progress and innovation in optometry, Augsburger has dedicated his work to improving the profession in academics, clinical expertise and organization management for more than 30 years. Since his appointment, Dr. Augsburger has partnered with ICO's administration to advance both ICO and the optometry profession.
Dr. Augsburger was honored in 2008 with the Distinguished Service Award by the American Optometric Association. “This is the highest compliment a doctor of optometry can receive from his profession,” Dr. Augsburger said of the honor. In 2007, the Illinois Optometric Association named Dr. Augsburger Optometrist of the Year; he had previously received Optometrist of the Year honors in Alabama and Ohio.
Dr. Augsburger served as president of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO), including four years on the Executive Committee. He has also held several board offices and served as president of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO). Prior to joining ICO, Dr. Augsburger served as interim provost at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
