Stone, OD, FAAO Christine Weber, EdD, MLS, AHIP Janis E. Winters, OD, FAAO Xiaohua Zhuang, PhD, FAAO Rebecca K. Zoltoski, PhD Why ICO? My transition to ICO was a rough one. I had never done any teaching or research related to the eye and felt as if I had landed in a foreign country without really knowing the language. When I was hired to teach biochemistry, I was not even confident I knew why optometrists needed to know biochemistry. By the end of my first week here, I had learned why they needed to know it, but it took me a bit longer to be able to convey those important ideas to the students. At the end of my second year, I was given the opportunity to attend a course designed to assist medical educators in becoming better instructors. I turned my course on its head, and I finally enjoyed teaching by using cases to help the students see the value of what they were learning. About the same time, I was fortunate to find some colleagues in the Chicago lens research community to accept me into their lab and my research found a new meaning as well. More recently, I have been able to bring some of that research back into ICO so that I am now more able to combine my research and teaching, as I set out to do so many years ago. Students at ICO have not only the educational/clinical community to gain experiences from, but they also have the larger Chicago community. ICO offers programs that strive to increase cultural awareness and diversity within the school and the clinic, as well as vision screenings, health clinics, and tutoring programs that allow the students to reach out to our neighbors in Bronzeville, as well as across the Chicagoland area. It is the diversity, not only in our clinic, but also in our student body, that makes ICO an unending educational experience. Biography While completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Zoltoski fell in love with research. Her early experiences in sleep anatomy research led her to pursue a PhD in pharmacology and neurosciences at Wake Forest University. In her postdoctoral training positions at University of California, San Diego, and Brock University, she realized she wanted a career where she could combine teaching and research. She came to ICO in 1997 to teach biochemistry, with courses in neuroanatomy and evidence-based health care to be added later. She also has established an active research laboratory working with clinicians on a wide variety of topic ranging from dry eye to vision therapy. Her main focus has been changes in lens ultrastructure with age and accommodation, for which she has received federal funding to pursue this research. Her background has provided her with the training necessary to add this important component to ICO. She has been fortunate enough to mentor more than 100 students, and feels that her research is successful today in large thanks to the excellent clinicians as well as her students at ICO. Special Interests Lens form and function and how it changes with age and accommodation, nutrition, aberrations, dry eye and vision therapy. Stone, OD, FAAO Christine Weber, EdD, MLS, AHIP Janis E. Winters, OD, FAAO Xiaohua Zhuang, PhD, FAAO Rebecca K. Zoltoski, PhD Why ICO? I believe that ICO is the ideal optometry school for prospective students for many reasons. The highly qualified faculty strive to provide a nurturing environment to students and embody true passion for the field of optometry. This can be seen in the ongoing research projects, publications in prominent optometry journals, awards and academic affiliations. The courses, laboratories and clinic all prepare the student clinician so that they are able to practice at the highest scope once they have graduated and entered their professional careers. The clinic provides exposure to a challenging patient population at the Illinois Eye Institute and access to state-of-the-art equipment, both of which also prepare the future optometrist well. Finally, Chicago is one of the best cities in the world. Having the opportunity to obtain an optometric degree with all the conveniences of home in such an amazing city is a combination that cannot be surpassed. Biography Dr. Sanghera earned her optometry degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry in 2006. She completed her residency in primary care and ocular disease from the Illinois College of Optometry in 2007. She then joined Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 2006 until January 2011, providing care to veterans and active duty military members and their families. In 2011, Dr. Sanghera became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and returned to ICO as a full-time faculty member. She is an active member in the clinic and laboratories. See Previous Year See Next Year Commencement 2020 May 16, 2020, a symbolic time for optometry, was the 177th Commencement for Illinois College of Optometry. Streaming our entire ceremony on Facebook Live we welcome 137 new doctors into the profession of optometry. The 2020 Commencement Address was delivered by Dr. Sandra Block. In addition to being a beloved ICO professor, Dr Block is known for serving students, the young patients of the Illinois Eye Institute at Princeton Elementary School, and children with special needs. Each graduate is now a member of ICO’s expansive alumni network. Visit the Alumni section of this website to discover the resources and opportunities available to all ICO alumni. Congratulations, new doctors! A Look Back Speaker Highlights: As you step into your careers as practicing optometrists, remember Dr. Block’s solutions for the unexpected challenges life will throw our way: Find A Constant – Remember the people in your life who are here to support your graduation just as they were there to support your first days as an ICO student. COVID-19 has brought missed birthdays, holidays, and ceremonies like graduation, there have been losses, but remember these people are still there for you as you move from chapter to chapter of life. Temporary Diversions – No matter what issues COVID-19 has forced us to face, they are only temporary. Looking to previous generations and the challenges they faced during their lifetime gives us strength and perseverance but also serves as a good reminder that we will get to the other side of this temporary problem. Tragic Optimism – A term coined by Viktor Frankel, a holocaust survivor, tragic optimism is the ability to maintain hope and find meaning in life despite its inescapable pain, loss and suffering. Those who cope well in times of crisis often follow the four pillars of tragic optimism: Belonging - Be seen, heard, loved, and cared for by friends and family. Purpose - Find what is important in your personal, professional and social life. Storytelling – Tell your story the way you wish it to be told. You have the ability to look at the world and decide where you want to be. Transcend – Rise above the chaos of life and realize you are prepared, you will adapt, and you are good at what you do.
