See Previous Year See Next Year Commencement 2022 May 21, 2022, ICO held its 179th Commencement for Illinois College of Optometry. It was the first ceremony to be held at the Chicago Symphony Center since 2019. Streaming our entire ceremony on Facebook Live and YouTube, we welcomed 132 new doctors into the profession of optometry. Dr. Roy Wesley was the Class of 2022’s commencement speaker. Son of Newton K. Wesley, instructor at the Monroe College of Optometry, a predecessor to ICO, he grew up working in the emerging contact lens industry of the 1950s. He is also president of the Dr. Newton K. Wesley Foundation Fund (NKWF). This foundation is dedicated to eye research and preserving the legacy of his father. Each graduate is now a member of ICO’s expansive alumni network. Visit the Alumni section of this website to discover the resources and opportunities available to all ICO alumni. Congratulations, new doctors! A Look Back Speaker Highlights: Dr. Wesley’s speech focused on the hardships the students had gone through in the last year, and the importance of perseverance and living one’s dreams. Here are a few of his takeaways: Vision is a Miracle! The first theme of Dr. Roy Wesley’s speech was the importance of taking care of oneself. He said, “vision and life itself is a miracle. Treasure your life and your actions. . . Take care of your mind and body . . . use your training as you go through life. As Dr. Newton K. Wesley always used to say, ‘Save vision, save lives.’ Be an example to your patients. If you tell your patients to exercise and eat well, you be that model of what you’re telling them to do.” Dream! Using his father, Dr. Newton K. Wesley (who suffered from Keratoconus which at that time had no treatment), as his reference point, he emphasized the importance of dreams. Dr. Roy Wesley told the crowd how Newton K. Wesley went through many hardships and challenges before inventing plastic lenses in the 1950s. Much of what he achieved was because he continued to dream. “Dr. Wesley was a man of big visions and dreams he conquered the disruptions thrown at him to succeed in building an industry serving millions with the gift of better sight.” He told the crowd, “Dream of what you wish to do. Dream of who you will become after this experience. That is your future. Within the dream is inspiration. With inspiration comes a purpose for living. Dream, imagine, and act to create a better future.” Persevere! A big theme throughout Dr. Wesley’s speech was the importance of perseverance. He said, “Life sometimes has a way of sabotaging our dreams and plans. Even though Dr. Newton Wesley suffered from vision impairment none of his doctors nor teachers could diagnose his disease. Only after many years of searching did Dr. Wesley have his vision restored using large scleral lenses. These uncomfortable lenses lead to the desire to help others and eventually created the contact lens industry we know today.” Dr. Roy Wesley emphasized that dreams are important. They are there to allow one to overcome hardships and obstacles. “I urge you to follow Dr. Newton K. Wesley’s example: use the obstacles in your life as steppingstones to create a new and better future. Let your dreams be open to the opportunities as they show up in your life. Help and serve those in need. Congratulations, doctors! Go out and live your dream!!” More Resources: Photos View and download images from the event on Flickr. See Previous Year See Next Year Commencement 2019 May 19, 2019, was a unique milestone in the Illinois College of Optometry’s history. Our 176th Commencement took place just one day after the College’s 6th Presidential Inauguration and the dedication of the Dr. Robert and Lena Lewenson Pediatric and Binocular Vision Center. We returned to the Chicago Symphony Center to welcome 156 new doctors into the profession of optometry. The 2019 Commencement Address was delivered by Dr. Karen Eng. In addition to chairing ICO’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Eng is a CEO, philanthropist, and mentor to underrepresented populations. She presented the Presidential medallion to Dr. Mark Colip during the ceremony. Dr. Colip, as part of his first Commencement as ICO President, distributed challenge coins to each graduate. Relive ICO’s 2019 Commencement with this collection of media and materials. In addition to the below, video footage and pictures can be found on social media using hashtag #ICOClassof2019. Each graduate is now a member of ICO’s expansive alumni network. Visit the Alumni section of this website to discover the resources and opportunities available to all ICO alumni. Congratulations, new doctors! A Look Back Speaker Highlights: As you step into your careers as practicing optometrists, remember Dr. Eng’s wishes for your past, present, and future: The Past – “I can attest, optometry school is not easy. Boards are not easy. Building your clinical skills, studying, doing volunteer work, potentially working, while trying to enjoy all Chicago has to offer is not easy. But you did it! And I’m here to tell you, ‘honor that struggle.’ It has helped you to get to this point, and it will help you get to the next level, so honor your struggle.” The Present – “This is also the time to consider adopting a role model mindset. Regardless of what others are observing -– and I would venture to say 'yes, they are observing you' -- I would give that this will help mold your disposition. Think about it, when you’re a role model, you’re trying to make a difference, make an impact, help others, inspire. Quite frankly, when you’re a role model, you’re not a jerk. You’re thoughtful, you’re generous, respectful and kind. And to me, these are characteristics I would love for people to describe me.” The Future – “While we would all like the eyes of our patients to be within the normal limits: clear and quiet, I hope you live your lives a little outside the normal that’s colorful and loud. I hope you realize what is important and what is not. I hope you learn to care less of what other people think about you and more of what you think of yourself. I hope you realize how far you’ve come and you remember when you got the things you wanted when they seemed so far away. I hope you smile and smile big, because you’re truly proud of yourself and you are the person you have worked so hard to become.” More Resources: Photos View and download images from the event on Flickr. See Previous Year See Next Year Commencement 2021 May 15, 2021, ICO held its 178th Commencement for Illinois College of Optometry. It was the first ceremony to be held on ICO's campus. Streaming our entire ceremony on Facebook Live and YouTube, we welcomed 132 new doctors into the profession of optometry. The Class of 2021 chose Dr. Gary Lesher to deliver the Commencement Address. In addition to being a beloved ICO professor since 1983, Dr Lesher has taught and inspired over 5,000 previous ICO graduates. In addition to serving as an ICO teacher of pharmacology and toxicology, he has also been a researcher, administrator, board member, author, department chair, and has provided countless hours of testimony before state legislatures nationwide for expanding the prescribing privileges of optometrists. Each graduate is now a member of ICO’s expansive alumni network. Visit the Alumni section of this website to discover the resources and opportunities available to all ICO alumni. Congratulations, new doctors! A Look Back Speaker Highlights: This year's commencement was the very first ceremony held on ICO's campus. Playing into the familiar environment of the ICO lecture hall, Dr. Lesher told students to "get out their clickers" and framed his speech around multiple-choice trivia questions on America's National Parks and the "Drug of the Day." Dr. Lesher reminded graduating students to: Educate Their Patients - The COVID-19 vaccine served as the cornerstone of Dr. Lesher's address. Addressing the graduates, he said, "At no time in history, has it been more apparent that understanding pharmacology is critical to your everyday lives... You all have the needed knowledge and understanding of science and medicine to educate your patients on this important healthcare crisis...," Dr. Lesher continued, "it is your responsibility to... help them understand the basic science and pharmacology of vaccines." Remain Agile - Recognizing the many ways Class of 2021 has had to "adjust, adapt, pivot, and simply do whatever is needed to do to continue their training," he praised this class's many successes, including their excellent NBEO scores. Be the Best - Throughout the speech, Dr. Lesher emphasized the excellent education graduates had had and also the importance of continuing as both mentors and trustworthy sources of information. "You are the most educated and up-to-date doctors of optometry on the planet. Go out and do your best every day!" He urged students to "keep learning, to work to improve your clinical skills, to treat each patient as an individual, and to respect everyone every day." Class of 2021, you have made us all proud and we are so happy to introduce to our alumni the newest ICO ODs. More Resources: Photos View and download images from the event on Flickr.
