  • President's Welcome and White Coat Ceremony 2019

    Join the Illinois College of Optometry in officially welcoming the Class of 2023 to their professional education on Saturday, August 24, 2019. Parent's Orientation 9:00 a.m., ICO Lecture Center President's Welcome & White Coat Ceremony 11:00 a.m., ICO Lecture Center Doors open for guests at 10:30 a.m. Parking Parking for guests is available (no fee) in the ICO parking garage depending upon availability. Entrance to the garage is on 32nd Street between Michigan and Indiana Avenues. You can enter the College directly from the garage. Security will direct guests into the garage. Guests parked on the street may enter ICO at the 3240 S Indiana Avenue. Guests with disabilities can be dropped off at this entrance. Photography An ICO photographer will be capturing photos of students during the ceremony in the Lecture Center and afterwards in the Library. These photos will be available to download for free on our Flickr page. Social Media Throughout the day, ICO will be posting on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Please use hashtag #ICOWhiteCoat when sharing photos and memories from these special events. The President’s Welcome and White Coat Ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook.   • ICO Wins AOSA Optometry Student Bowl

    On June 20, 2019, Nora Kuby, ’20, won the 28th Annual AOSA Optometric Student Bowl at Optometry’s Meeting in St. Louis. The competition, which was sponsored by Essilor of America, included students from 25 schools and colleges of optometry. Contestants answered optometric questions over several rounds as over 850 audience members cheered them on. For her victory, Nora was awarded $1,000 and The Ventura Cup. The trophy will be proudly displayed at the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago for one year. (This honor was previously won for ICO by Dr. Taylor Harris in 2017.) “I want to thank the entire ICO community for all the love and encouragement before, during, and after the Optometry Student Bowl,” says Nora. “Your collective belief in me made me believe in myself, and I could not have made ICO proud without you all!” In addition to Nora’s win, ICO was also recognized as a finalist in the event’s t-shirt design competition. We congratulate Nora and thank all members of the ICO community who helped make this win possible. ICO will be ready to defend the title in 2020 in Washington, D.C.!

  • National Academies of Practice Induct ICO Fellows

    The National Academies of Practice (NAP) has inducted ICO President Mark Colip, OD ’92, as a Distinguished Fellow of the NAP in Optometry. Founded in 1981, the NAP is an interprofessional organization with members representing 14 areas of health care. Fellows must be nominated by a current member. They are then selected by a membership committee based upon a review of their credentials and a clear demonstration of excellence in their respective professions. They are “dedicated to furthering practice, scholarship, and policy in support of interprofessional care.” Dr. Colip’s induction took place at a gala on March 9, 2019, in Washington, D.C. He was among 7 new inductees from optometry, including 2 more from ICO: Kristin Anderson, OD ’95, and Millicent Knight, OD ‘87. Previous ICO inductees in attendance included Sandra Block, OD ’81, Christopher Lievens, OD ’95, and Timothy Wingert, OD ’79. The Illinois College of Optometry is proud of Dr. Colip and the hard-working ICO alumni who have been honored by the NAP. Additionally, we congratulate Dr. Sandra Block, who received the James A.     Spring is on its way, and so is ICO’s Practice Opportunities Symposium. This annual event is an aspiring OD’s dream, with over 40 doctors, vendors, alumni, and optometry professionals ready to engage with students. These experts offer exclusive panels on the various modes of optometric practice. Once the presentations are complete, attendees enjoy networking, vendors, and of course, refreshments.   • Higher Learning Commission Comment Submission

    The Illinois College of Optometry is seeking comments from the public about the college in preparation for its periodic evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. The College will host a visit on February 25-26, 2019 from a team of peer reviewers representing the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The team will review the institution’s ongoing ability to meet HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation. ICO has been accredited by HLC since 1969. Comments must be made in writing and must address substantive matters related to the quality of the institution or its academic programs. If you wish to comment, please forward them to HLC at hlcommission.org/comment or mail them to the address below. All comments must be received by January 25, 2019.
